Wood Tips

Your refinished or new hardwood floor is beautiful. We want to keep it that way so we’ve dedicated this page to help you maintain your floor’s beauty for years to come.

Preventive Maintenance

Technological advances have made wood floor maintenance easy and effective. Just a few preventive measures can prolong and preserve the life of your wood floor.

  1. 1.Never use sheet vinyl or tile floor care products on wood floors.   Self Polishing acrylic waxes cause wood to become slippery and appear dull quickly.  The only remedy in this situation is to sand and refinish the floor.

  2. 2.Place mats and throw rugs at doorway exteriors and interiors to help prevent the tracking of grit, dirt and other debris.

  3. 3.Never wet-mop a wood floor. Standing water can dull the finish, damage the wood and leave a discoloring residue.

  4. 4.Wipe up food and other spills immediately with a slightly dampened towel.

  5. 5.We don’t recommend waxing a hardwood floor. An alternative to waxing would be to recoat every 5-7 years. In the meantime, use an alcohol based cleaner like Squeaky Concentrated Cleaner (manufactured by Basic Coatings) on a weekly basis. This product is available for purchase from Anchondo’s Flooring.

  6. 6.Put soft plastic or fabric-faced glides under the legs of furniture to prevent scuffing and scratching.

  7. 7.Don’t walk on wood floors while wearing cleats, sport shoes and high heels. These can dent the surface.

  8. 8.When moving furniture, do not slide furniture on wood floor. Instead, pick up furniture and carry to desired location.

  9. 9.For wood flooring in kitchen, place an area rug in front of the kitchen sink.

  10. 10.Use a humidifier throughout winter months to avoid shrinkage and minimize wood movement.

  11. 11.Use a dehumidifier in the summer months to decrease humidity levels to avoid crowning and over expansion in hardwood.
